What does Color Thief do?

Color Thief takes the tone of the image in the sample panel on the left and applies that look to all the images in the right panel.

How do I access the converted images?

You can drag the images from the right panel back into iPhoto, Aperture, the Finder or any other program that accepts image files. Use the "Select All" button to easily grab all the images, or ⌘+Click individual images.

Alternately you can use the Export… button to copy the images to a folder.

What format are the images saved in?

The output images are saved in the format of the input image. A jpg makes a jpg. A lossless png makes a lossless png. A compressed png makes a compressed png, etc… The exception is RAW camera files. As we alter the image data in our color transformation, we can no longer save these in RAW format. Instead, the image is saved in lossless 16-bit TIFF format.

How do I get the best results?

Best results occur when you use uncompressed image files, such as png, tiff, or RAW. Jpg compression loses detail in dark areas, which may become light areas after the color transformation. Our experience shows that images with smooth color gradients achieve the best effect.

I dragged my RAW files from Aperture but I'm getting low quality resultsi. What shouuld I do?

When you drag files from Aperture, it always creates a lossy jpg preview of the image. Instead use File→Export to export the originals or a lossless format such as 16-bit tiff, and then drag the exported files from the Finder into Color Thief.
